This year's "It" toy has been declared, and it's a Lalaloopsy doll -- Mittens Fluff 'N' Stuff, to be specific.
On your mark, get set, go!
If she's at the top of your toddler's holiday wish list, you better go fast ... and possibly far to find her, because she's already scarce.
If you've never heard of Lalaloopsy dolls, you will. Think Tickle Me Elmo excitement. There are reports that the doll that typically retails for $24.99 is already being sold on eBay for $150.
Why the fuss over these dolls?
There's no identifiable reason really.
They're cute and all, but they don't appear all that special.
They're simple rag dolls with plastic heads and big, round button eyes. Each of the eight dolls has her own story and is made from a specific kind of fabric.
For example, the coveted Mittens Fluff 'n' Stuff was made from pieces of an Eskimo's scarf. She has blue hair, a pet polar bear, and her "Sewn On" date (i.e. the date she magically came alive) is December 21.
Sweet, but not all that different than Cabbage Patch Kids or Beanie Babies or the many other toys that have gone before her.
Isaac Larian, the CEO for MGA Entertainment, who makes the dolls, told the New York Post he thinks the doll's appeal is her unique look.
"It's not yet another blond doll with a white face," he said.
While she reminds me a bit of a cross between Katy Perry (without the cleavage) and Lady Gaga when she wears those contacts, it is nice to see such a simple toy in the spotlight instead of some violent video game or a skanky Bratz doll.
And regardless of the doll's virtues, there's a small part of me that wants to join this hunt and be one of the few who emerges successful and victoriously brings home this lauded Lalaloopsy doll for my toddler daughter ... even though she's not quite 2 and has no idea what one is.
Because aren't "It" toys mostly about the chase anyway?
